North Texas Softball Fan Guide
With a new coach at the helm, the Mean Green softball team faces a 2014 schedule heavy on home games, abundant with in-state opponents, and marked with some of the best softball programs in the nation.
The Mean Green have a new coach in the dugout in Tracy Kee, who earned four Coach of the Year honors during her stint at East Carolina.
North Texas is staying close to home for much of its schedule, playing 19 of its 52 games against teams from Texas, including Texas State, Abilene Christian, Prairie View A&M, Stephen F. Austin, Houston, Texas Tech, Baylor, UTA, C-USA foes UTSA and UTEP, and the state's long-time powerhouse, Texas.
The home slate opens with an 11-game homestand spread out over three round-robin tournaments at Lovelace Stadium: the Lovelace Invitational, the Texas Shootout, and the Best Western/Courtyard Classic.
On March 11, the Mean Green hosts the Texas Longhorns in a doubleheader at Lovelace, followed the next day by a visit from Oklahoma State for a single game. North Texas will also play at Oklahoma State and defending national-champ Oklahoma, as well as Texas Tech, Houston, and Baylor.
Conference USA play begins on March 8 at Middle Tennessee, and North Texas plays its first home C-USA game on March 15 against UTSA.
Meet Coach Kee
Tracy Kee enters her first year at the helm of the North Texas softball team, but is a veteran of Conference USA softball.
Kee spent 26 seasons at East Carolina as a player, assistant and head coach. Following a standout playing career and successful six-year run as the assistant coach, she was given the reigns to the Pirates prior to the 1997 season and did not look back. She earned Coach of the Year honors four times including three in C-USA.
In 16 seasons as the East Carolina head coach, Kee compiled a 684-362 recor, and guided the Pirates to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three in her last five years. Kee and her staff were also named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mideast Region Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honoree twice.
The first of three home tournaments is the Lovelace Invitational, held February 14-15. The field includes Nicholls State, Southern, and Northern Iowa.
The Mean Green's second tournament is an all-Texas affair February 20-22, featuring Texas State, Abilene Christian, Prairie View A&M, and Stephen F. Austin.
Best Western/Courtyard Classic
North Texas wraps up tournament play and its opening 11-game homestand March 1-2 with two games each against Wichita State and McNeese State.
