North Texas Football Fan Guide

In its centennial year - and first in Conference USA - North Texas has six home games this season. The schedule includes three home games against schools from Texas - the first time that has happened since 1994.

Head Coach Dan McCarney

North Texas will open the season with a home game for the first time since 2001, when it faces Idaho on Aug. 31 at Apogee Stadium, the first meeting with the Vandals since the two teams met as Sun Belt Conference opponents in 2004.

The home slate also features Ball State (Sept. 14), Middle Tennessee (Oct. 12), Rice (Oct. 31), Texas-El Paso (Nov. 9) and Texas-San Antonio (Nov. 23). The Rice game is a Halloween night contest.

The 2013 road schedule is loaded with bowl-qualifiers from a year ago, leading off with Ohio on Sept. 7. The Mean Green travel to Georgia (Sept. 21), Tulane (Oct. 5), Louisiana Tech (Oct. 19) and Southern Miss (Oct. 26) before finishing the regular season at defending Conference USA champion Tulsa on Nov. 30.

Apogee Stadium Parking

There are three parking areas available to fans on game day at Apogee Stadium: the lot on the west and north sides of the stadium (Green Lot), the lots east of Apogee and nearby Victory Hall (Red/Blue Lot), and the lot around Fouts Field (Orange and ADA Lots).

Apogee Stadium

The Green, Red and Blue Lots are for Mean Green Club members with a parking pass, designated for the lot assigned to the member according the to Mean Green Priority Point System.

The Orange Lot is a cash lot open to the general public at a cost of $10 per parking spot. From this lot, fans can easily access Apogee Stadium via the Pedestrian Bridge across 35E, which empties fans at the north end of the stadium near Gate 3.

The ADA Lot, located in the southwest end of the Fouts Field lot, is available for handicapped fans on a first-come, first-served basis. Shuttle buses run from the ADA Lot to Apogee before games, return fans to the lot after the game, and are available to for those needing ADA assistance and one additional accompanying person. Prior to the game, the buses will drop fans at Apogee Stadium's Gate 2 or, for those wishing to tailgate, at the northeast Victory Hall parking lot. After the game, the service will pick up only at Gate 2 and drop off at the ADA parking lot.

Traffic Route Changes For 2013

A few changes have been made to the pre-game traffic routes to the Apogee Stadium parking lots, specifically to the Red, Orange, and ADA lots. Fans will now be able to use the exits at North Texas Boulevard; however, the North Texas Boulevard bridge over 35E will be closed to all traffic for two hours prior to the game.

North Texas All-Century Football Team

This season, North Texas football celebrates its 100th anniversary. As part of the centennial festivites, Mean Green fans were asked to select the North Texas All-Century Football Team.

North Texas Football 100th Anniversary

To fill the 28 roster spots, more than 120 players and coaches were named as finalists – a list that was compiled with the help of Mean Green letterwinners and Hall of Fame members. Fans then voted on the team, submitting more than 11,000 votes. A final selection committee, made up of long-time Mean Green football observers, media, and members of the athletic department, then met to determine the final roster.

The poster is 36 x 12 inches and has a photo and the name of all the members of the All-Century Team, which was announced at the Green-White spring football game on April 13. The poster is also available for purchase at the North Texas Team Store located at Apogee Stadium, next to Gate 2.

The commemorative book, which contains photos from throughout the program's history and a bio of every member of the All-Century Team, will be available in August. The book will be sold at the North Texas Team Store and will also be available for order online.

Tailgating

Tailgating is as much a tradition at Mean Green football games as any other university, and North Texas took tailgating into account when it constructed Apogee Stadium, setting aside an area just outside the stadium for students, fans and alumni to gather before games. It's called The Hill, a gentle rise dotted with trees lying just outside the east entrance to the stadium and north of the Victory Hall parking lot.

Tailgating takes place on the Hill, in all parking lots adjacent to Apogee Stadium, in the Fouts Field lot, and on the main campus before every home game.

Tailgating on The Hill

Fans are encouraged to arrive early and tailgate prior to the game. Campus parking lots open at 8 a.m., and tailgating items may dropped off near Apogee Stadium at the former Radisson Hotel parking lot adjacent to The Hill. Entry will be from the I-35 South Access Road. This location will close approximately four hours prior to kick off and will reopen one hour after the end of the game.

Tailgating activity that takes up vacant parking spaces or interferes with traffic flow within a parking lot is prohibited. Saving spaces for other vehicles is also prohibited.

Tents, tarps or canopies are not permitted if they impede foot or vehicular traffic or if they extend into additional parking spaces. In order to protect parking lot surfaces, tents, awnings, and similar items that require ground stakes are prohibited. Violators of this policy will be asked by University Event Staff to dismantle the tent, tarp, or canopy. Stakes used in the green space area may not be longer than 12 inches or wider than half an inch in order to not interfere with underground utilities. Weights or sandbags are encouraged.

Mean Green March

Two hours prior to kickoff, the North Texas football team arrives at Apogee Stadium, accompanied by the band, dancers and cheerleaders. Be sure to greet the team and cheer them on as they march through the tailgating area to the stadium.

Green Brigade Pregame Extravaganza

Thirty minutes prior to kickoff, the North Texas Green Brigade band will perform on the Apogee Stadium field, leading up to the moment when the football team emerges from the lockerroom for the game.

Mean Green Spirit And Traditions

The spirit of the Mean Green is prevalent throughout the University of North Texas but never more so than during Mean Green sports events. Participate and enjoy these Mean Green game-day rituals.
